The Importance of Qurbani in Islam
The Qurbani (Udhiya), or sacrificial slaughter, holds great importance in Islam as an act of worship and devotion. Its significance comes from the Qur’an, the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
Qurbani commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah’s command. Allah replaced Ismail with a ram, showing that true sacrifice lies in submission to Him.
(Surah As-Saffat 37:102-107)
An Act of Worship and Gratitude
Qurbani is a way of expressing gratitude for Allah’s blessings. The Qur’an says:
“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him.” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:37)
This highlights that Qurbani is about sincerity and taqwa (God-consciousness), not just the sacrifice itself.
A Strong Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ performed Qurbani regularly and encouraged Muslims who can afford it to do so. He said:
“Whoever has the means but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not approach our place of prayer.”
(Ibn Majah)
Charity and Social Solidarity
Qurbani meat is distributed among family, friends, and the poor. This ensures that even the most vulnerable in society can enjoy meat, often a rare luxury. It strengthens bonds of brotherhood, compassion, and community care.
Spiritual Reminder
Qurbani reminds us of the spirit of sacrifice in our own lives - to place Allah’s commands above personal desires, and to be willing to give up what we love for His sake.

Eligibility Criteria to perform Qurbani
Golden Ruling of Islam:
Yes, that aligns with the principle of ease in Islam. The golden ruling in Islam is that obligations and recommended acts should not be a burden on believers. If someone cannot afford animals for Qurbani, he/she will not be committing any sin.
This principle is based on the Qur'an:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
"Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear."
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286)
This demonstrates Islam’s emphasis on compassion, flexibility, and ease in worship. The Aqiqah is a Sunnah, and while it is highly recommended, it should be done within one’s means.
The Sunnah Practices for Qurbani
Qurbani, also known as Udhiya, is a sacred act of worship in Islam performed during Eid al-Adha. It revives the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who submitted wholeheartedly to Allah’s command, and reflects the mercy of Allah swt in providing a ram in place of his son (pbuh).
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself performed Qurbani every year and encouraged all Muslims with the means to do so. He said: “Whoever can afford it but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our prayer place.” (Ibn Majah)
The Sunnah practices include choosing healthy animals that meet the age and quality requirements, treating them with kindness, and ensuring the sacrifice is done in the name of Allah alone. It is recommended to personally witness the sacrifice if possible, as the Prophet ﷺ did.
The meat should be divided into three portions:
one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor and needy.
Qurbani is not about the meat or the blood, but about the sincerity of our hearts. By fulfilling this Sunnah, we demonstrate obedience, compassion, and solidarity with those in need.
